Dashnami Akhara temple
Amid chanting of vedic hymns, a procession of devotees, including Swami Dipinder Giri its custodian, the Chhari Mubarak was taken out of the Dashnami Akhara temple in Srinagar for its onward journey to the Himalayan cave shrine of Amarnath.
The Chhari Mubarak will reach the holy cave on August 10 coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.

Devotees believe the structure symbolises the mythical powers of the Hindu god.
So far, over 360,000 pilgrims have had darshan in the Amarnath Cave shrine. IANS

Visiting Indian hockey team came from one goal down to beat Bangladesh 2-1 in the first of the three-match test series at the newly-laid turf at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) yesterday.
Farhad Ahmed Shitul gave Bangladesh a 30th-minute lead before Gurjinder Singh levelled the margin from a penalty corner in the 32nd minute and Harjeet Singh struck the winner in the next minute. The game was split into four quarters of 15 minutes each.
The Indian national team is generally dominated by players from Punjab and there is no exception in this second-string side either, as there are seven players from Punjab and they are the ones who form the nucleus of the side.
Defenders Gurjinder and Gurmail Singh thwarted Bangladesh's sporadic attacks while Harjeet and Gurinder Singh made the inroads in the attack behind striker Talwinder Singh.
Though penalty corner specialist Gurpreet Singh is not in this squad, Gurjinder himself is a very promising player, who scored the equaliser and became the man of the match, putting behind Gurmail Singh and Bangladesh goalkeeper Ashim Gop.
“It was a good game even though the pitch was a little bit slippery. But I think we can improve on our performances match by match,” said Gurjinder, who was the top scorer in Indian Hockey League last season with 22 goals and won one crore rupees as the highest goal scorer as well as the best player of the league.
Gurjinder informed that there is a lot of hockey played in Punjab and the players earn handsome amount of money by playing hockey.
Bangladesh, who suffered a 1-9 defeat to Indian main squad last time around, played comparatively better against the second-string side yesterday but could not build up the game properly. The midfield was the area of concern for the home and the midfielders lost possession number of times, allowing the opposition to dominate. Besides, defender Mamunur Rahman Chayan often deposited the ball to opponents with his unnecessary flick shots which made the task for the other defenders a lot harder.
However, goalkeeper Ashim Gop played brilliantly as he spoilt some penalty corners as well as field attempts from the Indian side.
“I am happy with the result. Our boys implemented the plans sixty per cent and pressed hard in the last quarter and they never gave,” said Bangladesh's Pakistani coach Naveed Alam. “A 2-1 defeat against India is alright but we will be trying to catch up with them in the next match.”
“I am not happy with the result but I am sure in the upcoming matches, our boys will play better hockey,” said Indian coach Tusher Khandoker.

The sight of the drowning passengers of Pinak-6, which sank in the Padma River Monday, and the rescuers' frantic efforts to salvage the ill-fated victims of the heavily crammed launch have emerged in a new video posted on Facebook.
The 3:16-minute mobile phone footage of the moments immediately after the launch was grasped by the Padma shows the victims trying to stay afloat defying the strong current.
Sam Sumon, a witness who was travelling in a ferry, filmed the rescue scene and posted it on his timeline the same day.
"Everything happened in front of my eyes but I couldn't do anything," he wrote with the Facebook post.
Rescuers who rushed there with some speedboats were seen trying frantically to pull up the victims.
The death toll reached 9 while 129 were still missing till filing of this report at 5:25pm today.

Almost 600 people are now known to have died in the earthquake that hit Yunnan province on Sunday, officials say.
The 6.1-magnitude quake struck a mountainous area, destroying thousands of houses and triggering landslides.
A total of 589 people were killed and nine were missing, China's Ministry of Civil Affairs said. More than 2,400 people were hurt, it said.
Several roads have been blocked and there are concerns about barrier lakes formed when debris blocks rivers.
The quake's epicentre was in Longtoushan Township in Ludian County, a region with steep hills and narrow roads.
China has sent thousands of troops to the area to assist survivors and search debris for any trapped people.
Tents and relief goods are also being brought in both by road and helicopter.
But teams trying to repair damaged roads are being hampered by torrential rain, rockfalls and aftershocks, local reports say.
Officials have also urged volunteers to stay away from the area because the damage to infrastructure means routes that are open are very congested.
Meanwhile, about 4,200 residents have been evacuated from one area because of a barrier lake on the Niulan river.
Waters levels in the lake were rising at a rate of 16cm per hour, Xinhua news agency quoted a technical specialist as saying late on Tuesday.
Sixty soldiers was also trapped by a flood from a barrier lake on Tuesday and had to be rescued, the report added.

After the much-publicised Padma bridge episode, the World Bank has now realigned its approach to tackling corruption in projects.
Previously, the multilateral lender would wash its hands off projects as soon as allegations of corruption surfaced. But now, in essence, it will carry on with the projects but will work with local authorities to identify and snuff out the issues.
“When evidence of corruption comes to light, its response should not be to disengage, but to engage differently,” it said in its Country Assistance Strategy Progress Report.
The anti-poverty organisation's new approach to handling graft would involve: enhancing oversight, changing procurement arrangements, prioritising institutional reforms or shifting to analytical or technical work that will change the political economy and build stronger domestic coalitions for reform to enable future assistance.
The WB cancelled its financing for the Padma bridge project in June 2012 after corruption allegations were brought up against some public servants.
Although talks had revived, Bangladesh ultimately withdrew its request for funds in January 2013, just before the expert panel reported that the government did not carry out the full and fair corruption investigation it had promised to.
Project implementation suffered, with allegations of corruption in the bridge project prompting the WB to reconsider its approach to governance in the country, to find ways to remain engaged while also taking a more pro-active approach to addressing governance challenges, the WB said.
“In the course of this reconsideration, the Bank found that its efforts to improve governance in Bangladesh have had limited success due to unrealistic expectations, short timelines, and misreadings of political will," it said.
The WB found that any disengagement carries a cost. For example, the bank committed $4.6 billion for Bangladesh for three fiscal years from 2010 through to 2013, but it achieved only 87 percent of the planned projects.
The June 2012 cancellation of WB's $1.2 billion financing for the Padma bridge project resulted in a portfolio below targeted levels, said the report.
Furthermore, the Independent Evaluation Group of the WB found that decisions to disengage have affected its relationship with clients, resulted in losses of knowledge and momentum and left important development objectives unaddressed.
In response, the WB has decided to change its attitude to correct the deficiencies.
It is now applying stronger integrity safeguards to centralised expenditures (where it directly supervises procurement, financial management, compliance and value-for-money such as for large-scale infrastructure contracts), including the use of forensic auditing, independent procurement agencies and independent reviews of government processes, to verify compliance and detect corruption where risks are very high.
For decentralised expenditures (that is, small expenditures at local levels where the WB relies on intermediaries to supervise procurement, financial management, compliance and value-for-money), the lender's enhanced safeguards may involve better record-keeping, strengthened management information systems and stronger supervision.
At the same time, the WB continues to assist the government in building systems to manage its own corruption risks, especially in budget formulation and management, public procurement, audit and parliamentary oversight, banking supervision and payment systems, and local government.
The aim of this work is to enable continued WB engagement, even in challenging integrity environments and sustained improvement in country governance systems over time.
The WB board approved $1.8 billion for Bangladesh for fiscal 2013-14, with plans to lend $1.32 billion for the current fiscal year, said the multilateral agency.
The lending programme for fiscal 2014-15 and the revised results framework aim to prepare for a more selective WB engagement in future.
The WB will start to reengage in areas that are critical for growth, while consolidating past achievements in service delivery through additional financing to ongoing projects.
Then, under the new strategy to be developed in fiscal 2014-15, the basis of the multilateral lender's engagement will shift from financing to analytical and technical assistance in areas such as health and education, where alternative financing is relatively available and policy and institutional arrangements are mature.
The move would free up WB resources for areas such as energy and transportation infrastructure, where progress has been limited and WB has a strong comparative advantage as a reform leader and financier.
The progress report also evaluated the development outcomes of the WB projects in Bangladesh.
It said the country's record on public sector performance and corruption is mixed.
Bangladesh's overall Country Policy and Institutional Assessment rating fell from 3.5 in 2007 to 3.3 in 2011-12.
The rating for public sector management and institutions, which strongly influences International Development Agency's performance based allocation, was only 2.9 in 2012, below IDA and South Asia averages.
Although Bangladesh's ranking in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index rose from the bottom of the list of 159 countries in 2005 to 144 out of 176 countries in 2012, it remains below Nepal and Pakistan.
“Progress on high-profile corruption cases has been limited, and on occasion the government has allowed undeclared income to be recognised at lower tax rates,” said the report.
It also said governance-related vulnerabilities in the banking sector are also a concern: fraud in several state-owned commercial banks in fiscal 2012-13 resulted in losses exceeding $500 million.
“There has been limited progress in holding perpetrators accountable,” the report added.

The agitating garment workers of Tuba Group this afternoon vowed to continue their demonstration rejecting the authorities' assurance of payment of two months' wages on Wednesday.
Today, the seventh day of their mass hunger strike, they insisted that the owners pay their three months' due salaries and festival bonuses in full and immediately.
The workers' announcement came around 6:30pm, one and half hours after garment the factory owners' association -- Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BGMEA) -- had asked them to end their demonstration and return to work.
The workers also vowed to lay siege to BGMEA Bhaban in the Dhaka on Tuesday.
The RMG workers started the fast-unto-death on the seventh floor of Hossain Super Market at Pragati Sarani since July 28 demanding their unpaid salaries for the months of May, June and July and Eid bonus.
Health condition of at least seven workers deteriorated today, said the medical team working for the labourers.
Earlier, in a press conference at the Hossain Super Market, which houses three units of the group today, Garment Workers Unity Forum president Moshrefa Mishu, threatened to lay seize the BGMEA Bhaban at 11am.
The agitating workers also decided to hold rallies and bring out processions in every RMG industrial area across the county at 4:00pm tomorrow.
Hours after the workers' threat, BGMEA leaders at an emergency meeting this afternoon decided to pay the salaries to 1,600 workers from their own fund.
“We will pay the salaries for two months. The rest of the dues will be paid by the Tuba Group,” BGMEA acting president SM Mannan Kochi told The Daily Star.
In an instant reaction, Mishu, who has been fasting along with the RMG workers of Tuba Group since Monday, threatened to continue their programme rejecting the BGMEA's assurance.
Meanwhile, the leaders and activists of Gonotantrik Bam Morcha, which expressed solidarity with the demonstrating workers, have decided to lay siege to the labour ministry at 11:00am Monday, its convener Subhrangshu Chakravarty told The Daily Star.
More than Tk 4.14 crore is needed to pay three months' arrears and Eid bonus to 1,600 workers of the Group.
Both the BGMEA and Tuba management had applied for bank loans to pay the workers. But the applications were rejected for failure to provide a guarantee from Group's Managing Director Delwar Hossain, who has been in jail since February 9 for his role in Tazreen fire that killed 112 people in November 2012.

At least 296 Palestinian children and adolescents have been killed since Israel launched its offensive in the Gaza Strip, the UN said yesterday as fighting escalated after a humanitarian ceasefire collapsed to end the violence.
"Children make up for 30 percent of the civilian casualties," said the UN children's agency UNICEF, adding that the toll was based on deaths which it was able to verify and was likely to rise.
The toll breaks down to 187 boys and 109 girls, with at least 203 of them under the age of 12.
Meanwhile, air strikes and tank fire continued pounding huge areas of southern Gaza into rubble, killing scores more people, as militants kept up their cross-border fire, with 56 rockets hitting Israel and another six downed, including two over greater Tel Aviv.
Since midnight (2100 GMT), more than 86 people have been killed, the vast majority in Rafah, raising the overall toll to 1,676, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said, putting the number of wounded at more than 9,000.
UN figures indicate at least two thirds of the dead are civilians, with around one third women and children.
Amid raging violence, the Israeli army yesterday gave a first indication it was ending operations in parts of Gaza, while continuing to bombard other areas ahead of fresh truce talks in Cairo.
As a Palestinian delegation flew to Egypt in search of a ceasefire, the Israeli army messaged residents of part of northern Gaza that it was "safe" to return home.
"They have been informed it is safe for civilians to return to Beit Lahiya and Al-Atatra," a spokeswoman told AFP, in what was understood to be a confirmation that troops had stopped operating there.
Witnesses in the north confirmed seeing troops leaving the area as others were seen leaving another flashpoint area in southern Gaza.
It was the first time troops had been seen pulling back since the start of Israel's devastating 26-day operation, which has so far claimed more than 1,660 Palestinian lives and displaced up to a quarter of the territory's population.
The move came after an army spokesman told AFP Israel was "quite close to completing" the destruction of tunnels used for infiltrating southern Israel -- the main objective of the ground operation.
Despite the partial withdrawal, Israel's security cabinet decided against sending a delegation to ceasefire talks with the Palestinians in Cairo, media reports said.
With a 12-member Palestinian delegation due to arrive for truce talks in Cairo, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said his country's truce proposal offered a "real chance to find a solution to the crisis" but that it must be implemented quickly to stop the bloodshed.
Chances of achieving a more permanent ceasefire nosedived on Friday after Israel said it believed Hamas militants had captured a 23-year-old soldier in a Friday morning ambush near the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Immediately afterwards, Israel bombarded the Rafah area in shelling that is still ongoing, with medics saying it killed 114 people in 24 hours.
The alleged capture of Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin drew sharp condemnation from the United Nations and the White House, which jointly brokered the abortive 72-hour truce and demanded his immediate release.
Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, acknowledged its militants had staged an ambush early Friday in which soldiers were killed, but denied holding the soldier, saying the attackers were missing and presumed dead.
Israel considers the capture of its soldiers a casus belli, launching a 34-day war on the Lebanon's Hezbollah in 2006 after it seized two soldiers.
Around the same time, Gaza militants captured conscript Gilad Shalit and held him for five years before freeing him in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Microsoft's latest attempt to resist a US government warrant demanding access to emails stored on servers in Ireland has been dismissed by a federal judge.
A court in New York ruled against the tech company, which has consistently fought the order issued in December as part of a drug-trafficking trial.
Microsoft immediately announced plans to challenge the decision.
The company has previously said it will allow users to choose where their data is stored.
EMERGENCY LEGISLATION
Twitter released a report this week showing that the number of government requests for its users' data had almost doubled since last year.
The social network said it received 1,257 requests from the US authorities in the six months to the end of June, and it handed over some information in 72 percent of cases.
Microsoft's case has been closely watched by tech companies around the world, many of whom have rallied around their commercial rival's cause.
The legal battle, thought to be the only one of its kind in the US, could affect the wider tech industry, which faces mounting pressure from government authorities to allow access to data.
Last month, the UK voted through emergency legislation giving the security services access to people's phone and internet records, including some powers to go after those outside the country.
Microsoft, which is one of the world's largest email providers, says this case is about protecting data customers' rights to privacy.
The data requested by the US government is stored on servers in Dublin, the Irish capital, outside the country's legal jurisdiction.
Reacting to the New York judge's verdict, Microsoft said: "The district court's decision would not represent the final step in this process.
Brad Smith, the company's general counsel, said: "We will appeal promptly and continue to advocate that people's email deserves strong privacy protection in the US and around the world."
